Oil Conservation towards Healthy and Better Environment

Oil is a fuel. Fuels are the sources which run the world today. Most of the things that we use in our daily life are made from fuels. Even the basic necessities i.e., food, clothing and shelter are also dependent upon fuels. Food that we eat is cooked on stove that is run on LPG, clothes that we wear are manufactured in industries using machines that are run on fuels, material for building house in which we live is manufactured by using fuel run machines.

Oil is a natural and non-renewable source of energy like wood, coal, and gas which means it takes millions of years in its production. Now, if oil is that much important in our lives than why do we need to conserve it? Well, human beings are using oil rapidly. When fossil fuels are burned, CO2 isn’t the only gas released. Other harmful gases such as nitrogen and sulphur oxides are also produced. Burning fossil fuels causes air pollution and smog. It is the cause of everything bad happening right now on the surface of the earth! It is polluting the environment in each and every point of it

  1. At the time of extraction
  2. At the time of transportation
  3. At the time of using (Burning)
  4. At the time when all fuel gets over

Study has shown that if we don’t use fuels for even a day, a lot of change happens in the atmosphere. Trees usually absorb a lot of the polluted air. With no fuel emitted in a day, the air we breathe will be very pure. Global warming will reduce.

  1. Global Warming: Burning fuels it’s comprise carbon dioxide that is not useful to breathe and many more harmful gases that affect us. The climatic balancing has broken. The local temperature is increasing day by day. The climate will be changed by 5°C. Global warming can cause the melt of icebergs and the huge ice of North Pole and South Pole.
  2. Ozone layer depletion: Ozone layer shields us from harmful Ultraviolet radiation of the Sun. Greenhouse gases (fluorocarbons) are depleting the Ozone layer faster than ever before. The holes in Ozone layer mean sunburns and skin cancer from exposure to UV rays.
  3. Change in climate: According to the world health organisation, climate change affects the social and environmental determinants of health – clean air, safe drinking water, food security and shelter. Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approximately 2,50,000 additional deaths every year from heat stress, malnutrition, etc., Now summer is too hot like in many cities temperature is increased 2°c to 3°c from previous years. You can see Prayagraj in declared as the hottest city in India.
  4. Health Hazards:  Besides damaging the environment, air pollution caused by the emissions of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds from vehicle exhausts cause tremendous air pollution which in turn causes asthma, weaken the immune system, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, lung cancer and other respiratory problems in humans. Natural flora and fauna get affected with the toxic emissions that further complicate the ecological imbalance.
  5. Future Implications: The increase in population has led to increase in demand of more fuel. Sagacious and frugal use of fossil fuels is the direst need of the hour. The present rate at which the fossil fuels are being used is quite alarming. There won’t be left anything for the coming generations. We will be called highly selfish generation, if we don’t leave fuels for the future generations.
  6. We India at the rate of using resources require 2.6 earths to recover the resources used. That is the healing process of the earth to recover sustainable balance of environment , its flora and fauna is very slow in past few decades compared to earlier century where using resource and earths time to recover was 1:1 ratio.
  7. it’s better not to use fossil fuels rather than saving them. For obtaining fossil fuels we dig the earth to deeper depths resulting in the displacement of weight from one place to the other and fill the earth with holes.Due to all these scenarios in order to keep the balance earth has to adjust its tectonic plates resulting in the disasters like tsunamis etc causing lot of deaths and environment issues.

Now, the question arises that since there are so many problems, how can we solve them? The following are some ways:

1. Save fuel: Fuel and energy saved is as good as produced. We could use shared or public transport like trams and metros. We can switch off engines while waiting for traffic signals. We take an exercising walk to nearby places. We use bicycle not just as a sport, but as a transport. We use more efficient fuels. We switch off gadgets and appliances when not in use. We use green vehicles and latest technology based machines. Also drive vehicles uniformly at recommended speeds and maintain properly to run at high mileage. Instead of polluting our location and then searching for a better place to live in, we all live healthier and jollier by saving fuel. Saving at least one drop of fuel for burning tomorrow is like getting one more inhale for a dying person.

2. Use new technology: We need to replace obsolete technologies with the latest. Simply, we could replace the domestic light bulbs by the efficient LED bulbs. Let’s use more efficient LCD and LED computer monitors and TVs in place of the bulky old ones. Let us use more efficient and silent CNG based engines rather than the traditional noisy diesel engines. Use of geothermal heat and biomass energies efficiently and cheaply serve our needs locally in the vicinity. Use of solar boats could reduce pollution of water bodies. use of electric cars & bikes or automobiles which run by solar power which is a cheap source and hydro-electric power and even wind mills can give us a pure less polluted environment with minimum cost will help a lot. Electric cars like the Indian Reva are good choices.

3. Use cleaner fuels: Burning of 1ltr of petrol produces 2.35Kg of CO2.Burning of 1ltr of diesel produces 5.9kg of CO2. So,Let’s use less of traditional fuels and use more of clean renewable fuels like solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, biomass, nuclear, hydro, biofuel and so on.

4. Sustainable development: We are already facing a huge energy crisis and it’s true that we need development, but why not make it sustainable development? We have to maintain sustainable for the better use of resources. Sustainable means “the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations”. But if we don’t do that and use it most, one day will come when we would also not get it.

Humans might be the most intelligent and smartest of all living beings, but what good is power when you can’t use it well. What good is intelligence when you can’t protect the environment which protected us all along.

The nature gave us air, water, food, clothing, you name it. So it’s time to return the favour. It’s time to take small steps together and protect our planet. It’s time to tell people the importance of environmental awareness. It’s time to make a difference.

At last, ended with a beautiful quote:-

“It’s Not yours,
Not mine,
It’s Ours.
So, protect your
Mother who,
Nourish You………!
